Texas Holdem is usually played with nine or ten players at a full table with a rotating blind system. First, the players will place out blinds and antes so that there is an initial amount that will get things started. Poker blinds are the initial bets that are placed in the game, before any cards are drawn. The amount of bet depends on the limit and betting structure that is applied. Then, each player is dealt two cards face down (hole cards) and then five cards face up (community cards) at the center of the table. Players can use any combination of their hole cards and the community cards to form the best five-card hand possible.
In any basic poker game, players strategically wager using five actions that are available to them – check, bet, fold, call, and raise. To check is to pass. Checking is possible only if no one has bet before you. If, however, someone has bet out, you must call, raise, or fold. To bet is to wager money in during the play of a hand. Betting is putting money in the pot and increasing your opponents’ price for staying in a hand. To fold is to give up a hand rather than to put money in the pot. To call is to match the current bet. To raise or to bet for value is to build the pot by placing bets that are higher than previous ones.
The ranks of hands in poker are as follows: the royal flush, the straight flush, the four of a kind, the full house, the flush, the straight, the three of a kind, the two pair, the pair, and the single high card.
In a game of poker, the player with the highest ranking hands at the end of the rounds wins. Therefore, the goal of any poker player is having the best five-card hand at the end of the game.
